Star Trek: The Motion Picture – 1979

As early as 1968, Gene Rodenberry envisioned a film version of Star Trek , which would tell the story of the formation of the famous crew of Enterprise (a story we only discovered today, in 2009). The project wanders for ten years, involving Harlan Ellison, Ray Bradbury, Theodore Sturgeon, flirting with various myths and science fiction themes. When he finally came out in December 1979, Star Trek: The film has nothing to do with this TV series colorful, perennial, cultured by viewers. It is an ambitious film, which is aware of its aura. More metaphysics, less humor, more reflection, less adventure: from this point of view, it’s a success. Star Trek: The Film is an authentic, classy trip, with a story of quality, served by the most talented technicians (Douglas Trumbull, John Dykstra, Ralph McQuarrie) and a director (Robert Wise). By his cosmic visions of the mysterious V’ger, the enigma of this destructive cloud advancing towards the Earth, the adaptation manages to hypnotize, to captivate until its denouement. But it deserves, because it is necessary to be carried for two hours by a serious and solemn film. In doing so, Robert Wise’s film neglects his original identity: transformed into a luxury experience, he forgets to be a popular adventure,Star Trek . It’s a humorous film that transcends the philosophical ambitions of the original series, but forgets that it was not just that. No, Star Trek is not only boring, it’s also funny. Unfortunately, this first episode will not refute this refractory prejudice. However, there remains an excellent sci-fi film, carried by magnificent spatial visions, and the founding compositions of Jerry Goldsmith.

Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan – 1982

In fact, there is no such thing as a fantastic enigma behind this logical binary – which would not displease our favorite Vulcan – since the same screenwriter is involved in three of these successes. With the exception of Star Trek: Premier Contact and Star Trek: Nemesis, the two peer films of “the new generation”, the aforementioned chapters have all been written by Nicholas Meyer. Contrary to what one would have thought, Meyer was a stranger to the universe, and yet he will have known, alone or almost, extract the license of its relative formal poverty. With a budget however lower than that of the first film, it proposes a work otherwise less cheap in appearance, starting with the costumes for example but also at the level of the action. That said, it is primarily from a thematic point of view, by granting itself a number of referents, citing Shakespeare and Moby Dick, making Starfleet a military-naval world, Meyer confers a certain class to his work. The author also understood better than Wise that the series was his characters, especially the trio formed by Kirk, Spock and McCoy. As such, their exchanges are really touching, be it dialogues of aging heroes between Kirk and McCoy or jousts between him and Spock, and especially, obviously, the last scene (and all the last act, epilogue included) between Wiliam Shatner and Leonard0 Nimoy. The whole sounds very fair. Suddenly, there are protagonists behind these pajamas. With this second opus, and his unforgettable villain, Meyer gives Star Trek his nobility through a film still considered today as the best of the series.

Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock – 1984

Believing that Spock should not come back to life, Nicholas Meyer preferred to abstain. Unfortunately, it sounded the death knell of the film which fell back into the trap of the television series scenario with, once again, a minor plot, despite this title full of promises. Basically, Star Trek 3: In Search of Spock looks like what would have given the first 20 minutes of Return of the Jedi(where the heroes go looking for Han Solo) stretched out over two hours. Moreover, Richard Marquand’s film has been there and this time, the influence of the saga of George Lucas is clearly felt, especially in terms of details. Thus we see a sequence referring directly to the Cantina or a pet for the villain, evoking that of Jabba. That said, the film also takes the opportunity to put the Klingons, destined to become one of the most famous alien races of the saga, on the front of the stage. And it is this kind of exploration of the universe that we would have liked to see further developed in this third part that touches only everything related to Vulcan mythology for example, while the film sees the accelerated growth of a resurrected Spock. Instead, the shortcomings of the scenario are filled by infant starwarseries. Remains a world that extends a little more and still, our dear trio of characters in mind.


Star Trek IV: The Travel Home – 1986
